- Pakistan's Election Commission postpones upcoming parliamentary elections until February 18 because of the unrest following Benazir Bhutto's assassination.
- Rep. Tom Lantos (CA-12), the only Holocaust survivor elected to Congress, retires due to esophageal cancer.
January 3
- Sixteen U.S. states have joined a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), challenging its decision to stop California from implementing a landmark law limiting global warming pollution from new automobiles.
- Kenya's political crisis and resulting tribal unrest stretched into a fifth day with more than 300 dead following the December 27 reelection of President Mwai Kibaki.
- Republican Mike Huckabee and Democrat Barack Obama win the 'first in the nation', Iowa caucuses. Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut and Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware quit the presidential race.

- North Korea accused parties in the six-nation talks of delays in carrying out their commitments, thus North Korea will slow the disablement of some nuclear facilities. The U.S State Department said that North Korea has not provided a complete nuclear declaration by the end of 2007, a key part of a February 2007 aid-for-disarmament deal.
- President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, is reelected with 53.47% of the vote

- ABC News/WMUR/Facebook presidential debates held in New Hampshire.
- A Nevada levee bursts, flooding a large portion of the Fernly, forcing the evacuations of 3,500 residents.

- Iranian naval speedboats confront U.S. Navy warships and in the Strait of Hormuz.

- Gunbattles between Sri Lankan government troops and Tamil Tiger rebels brought the death toll for four days of fighting to 81.
- Former President of Liberia, Charles Taylor, being tried for war crimes at the Hague, pleaded not guilty to the 11 charges against him, which include murder, rape, enslavement and conscripting child soldiers.

- Sen. Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic primary in New Hampshire. Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John Edwards place 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the Republican primary, Sen. John McCain wins, with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney placing 2nd.
- President George Bush starts a six-nation Mideast tour aimed at jump-starting the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

- Missile fired at a dead U.S. spy satellite in space destroyed the satellite's fuel tank containing 1,000 lbs of hydrazine which is toxic to humans.

- National Intelligence Director Michael McConnell says the Taliban controls 10 percent to 11 percent of the country and the Karzai government controls 30 percent to 31 percent, while the majority of Afghanistan's population and territory remains under local tribal control.
- An Israeli airstrike into Gaza kills five members of Hamas, which then launched rockets into southern Israel killing a civilian.

- The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejects the Navy's appeal of restrictions that banned high-powered sonar within 12 nautical miles of the coast. A federal judge in Hawaii issued a similar ban for that state's coastline. Victories for conservation groups.

- Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne says the White House-brokered water negotiations between Alabama, Florida and Georgia have failed to produce an agreement. The three states have been feuding for nearly two decades over water rights in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint and the Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa river basins.

- Dmitri Medvedev wins the presidential election in a landslide. Vladimir Putin will remain in a position of power, serving as Medvedev's prime minister.
- More than 100 Palestinians are killed in five days as members of Hamas and the Israeli military trade rocket fire.

- The White House blames Hamas for causing the fighting between Israelis and Palestinians that has killed dozens and put a halt to peace talks.

- Sen. Hillary Clinton wins primaries in the Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island. Obama wins in Vermont.
- Sen. John McCain clinched the Republican Party's presidential nomination after sweeping GOP contests in four states.
- EPA head says he can't say when he would comply with a Supreme Court directive, now a year old, to determine whether greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles should be regulated.
- President Bush criticizes "provocative maneuvers" toward Colombia by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, saying that the United States stands with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.

- Buddhist monks commemorate the failed uprising of 1959 in Tibet by participating in a protest march in Lhasa.

- House Democrats failed to overturn President Bush's veto of a bill prohibiting the CIA from using waterboarding.
- Barack Obama wins the Mississippi Democratic primary 58% to Hillary Clinton's 40%.

- New York Governor Elliot Spitzer resigns his office after being linked to a prostitution scandal.
- Geraldine Ferraro resigns her honorary position with Clinton's campaign after she said in an interview last week that Obama would not have made it this far if he were white.

- Tibetan protests turn violent, leading to China's crackdown on dissent. Demonstrations also occur in the western provinces of Gansu, Qinghai, and Sichuan. Chinese officials say the Dalai Lama has ochestrated the protests.
