- March: King Menelik of Shoa is proclaimed negus neghesti or "king of Kings," known outside Ethiopia as Emperor Menelik II, King of Ethiopia.
- May 2: Ethiopia and Italy sign Treaty of Ucciali (Wichale); the Ethiopians are cheated because the Italian version, unlike the Amharis version, contains a clause making Ethiopia an Italian protectorate.
