United States Senate election in California, 2010
The 2010 United States Senate election in California will take place in the U.S. state of California on 2 November 2010 alongside 33 other elections to the United States Senate in other states as well as elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. The election will fill California's Class III Senate seat, currently held by Democrat Barbara Boxer, Chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Boxer was first elected in 1992 and since been reelected to the Senate twice. In her most recent election in 2004, Boxer captured 58% of the vote against Republican Secretary of State Bill Jones.
Unlike most Senators up for reelection in 2010, Boxer has already officially announced her intent to seek another term. It is unlikely that she will be seriously opposed in the Democratic primary and therefore will probably be the Democratic nominee.
Potential Republican candidates include Representatives Dan Lungren, Dana Rohrabacher, Darrell Issa and Duncan Hunter as well as state Senator and 2006 candidate for Lt. Governor Tom McClintock. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has also been rumored to be considering a run, although he has stated that he currently has no plans to seek the seat. Other candidates are also likely to emerge before 2010.
