This is, in any event, an Archive page, and is left up for historical purposes only. Do not click on any links, or if you do, do not fix any tags in the diaries displayed.

Thank you very much for your assistance in aiding the DailyKos Tag Cleanup Project; we will let you know when or if editing "bad tags" is once again allowed, or when we have redesigned this page so that only those tags that are safe to change are listed below. — Sardonyx 21:08, 12 September 2007 (PDT)

This page is now full! The only edits to this page should involve corrections. No newly completed cleanup jobs should be added to this page!

Keeping Completed Tag CleanUp Jobs here just so we can recheck from time to time to make sure the bad tags don't creep back in.

Note: this is the first Archive page of old cleanup jobs, and is being kept for reference purposes. Jobs start in mid-November, 2006, and continue through those completed on 31 January, 2007. The jobs are listed in chronological order, first completed job at the top and continuing in order of completion to the bottom.

New jobs should be added at the bottom of Tag:Completed Cleanup Jobs Archive Page 4, the fourth and most recent of the Archive pages. All completed tags and their basic tag conversion information are also listed on the Tag:cleanup jobs completed page. — Sardonyx 20:17, 13 April 2007 (PDT), latest revision 20 July 2007.

"mid term" type tags

We consider the midterm elections to be those that happen between the every 4 year General elections. The elections in 2006 were midterms, and the elections that will happen in 2010 will also be midterm elections. We have already designated "2006 elections" as the tag to designate the mid term elections of 2006. Therefore, the current tags using variants of "midterm" should be changed.

Job: Change the "mid term" type tags to "2006 elections" and make sure the "2006 elections tag is in there only once. If the tag "2006" alone is listed, delete it.

Here is the list of diaries with these tags. The number listed is the number of diaries that contain the tag.

"Ford" tag

As of 11-18-06 there are 147 diaries with the tag "Ford" in them. We don't know if these are incorrect tags for "Gerald Ford", "Harold Ford Jr." or "Henry Ford", or if they refer to Ford Motor Company.

Job: Review these diaries to see if they refer to the man or the company. If they refer to a person, correct the tag to reflect the full name. If they refer to the company, change to "Ford Motor Co."

As of 11-18-06 there are 138 diaries with the tag "diaries" in them. This tag makes no sense as a search term and should be deleted.

Note: Diaries that the community decides were written by trolls should be tagged with the "troll diary" tag - and no other troll type tags - a lot of the existing ones are kind of "creative" but not useful as tags.
Diaries that are discussion trolls should be tagged with the "trolls" tag

"Pinochet" Tag

"Pinochet" is being entered alone without the first name.

Job: Check the "Pinochet" tags and replace with "Augusto Pinochet". If the tag is for a diary that is only a day or two old, please consider leaving a comment reminding that name tags require both first and last names.

Update: As of 13 December 2006 21:31 (EST), there are 0 entries remaining. The newest of the diaries was over 32 hours old, so comments were not left; will leave for any future occurrences within 24 hours of original posting. --Sardonyx

"VA" Tag

The "VA" Tag alone has historically been used to refer to "Veterans Affairs" or "Veterans Administration" while VA-Sen or VA-01 refers to the state of Virginia and the appropriate elected office. I've caught enough state abbreviations - including VA being used alone to refer to the states that this tag bears remapping. States alone, without the "-Sen" or congressional district representation should be spelled out.

"VA" clearly has more entries than "veterans affairs" or "Veterans Administration" right now - however, without making this change there will always be a question about whether VA means the state or the govt. veterans agency.

Job: Check the diaries using the "VA" tag and change to either "Virginia" or "Veterans Administration" as appropriate based on the diary.

Update (as of 12/12/2006 at 2:24am): This job is now completed.

Other "veterans" type tags

Job: There are a number of other tags that should be changed to "Veterans Administration", "Veterans Affairs" or simply "veterans" depending on what the diary is discussing. It may be appropriate for a diary to have both of these tags. Note that often the difference is in the "s" at the end of veterans.

Update (As of 2.22am EST 12/12/06): This job is now completed.

Links to the bad tags:

There are 80 "Time", and 67 "Time Magazine" Tags as of Sunday, December 17, 2006 20:33 EST.

Job: The "Time" Tags that refer to Time Magazine should be changed to "Time Magazine". (I'm trying to imagine what purpose "Time" alone would serve as a Tag, but it's clear that "Time Magazine" is 100% unambiguous.) ---Halcyon

Update: As of 26 December 2006, 7:35pm EST, there are 11 "Time" tags remaining, dating from 15 December 2005 to 4 December 2006, talking about time in the abstract, the passage of time, and the like. This job is completed, and the 11 tags do not need to be rechecked, but any "Time" tags used 1 January 2007 and after should be checked to see whether they should instead be "Time Magazine". -- Sardonyx

Two-character state abbreviation tags

States should be written out in full, not given two-letter postal abbreviations, when they stand on their own. So tags like NY and CA should be changed to "New York" and "California" respectively, unless they actually mean something else. Some, like "MA", "OR", and "IN", are actually words in their own rights (though unlikely tags). Frequently, diarists will include both the abbreviation and the full state name as tags, in which case the abbreviation should be removed while the full name is left intact.

Job: Change the two-character state tags to the full state name, and make sure the full state name tag is in there only once. These will be listed in sets, added over the next day or two; the number in parenthesis after the tag link is the number of diaries containing that tag. — Sardonyx 21:35, 6 January 2007 (PST)

First set: "AZ" tag to "Arizona" (14), "CA" tag to "California" (39), "CT" tag to "Connecticut" (79), and "FL" tag to "Florida" (12).

Second set: "ID" tag to "Idaho" (but be sure it isn't referring to "identification" and change appropriately if so) (18), "MD" tag to "Maryland" (but be sure it isn't referring to "Medical Doctor", and change to "doctors" if so) (13), "MI" tag to "Michigan" (21), and "NH" tag to "New Hampshire" (43).

Third set: "NJ" tag to "New Jersey" (37), "NY" tag to "New York" (59), "NC" tag to "North Carolina" (47), and "OH" tag to "Ohio" (21).

Fourth set: "PA" tag to "Pennsylvania" (74), "TN" tag to "Tennessee" (17), "WA" tag to "Washington" (9), and "WV" tag to "West Virginia" (14).

Update: As of 23:20, 7 January 2007 (PST), all two-letter state abbreviations in this section have 0 tags remaining.

"White House" tags

The "White House" tag seems to indicate the "Bush Administration" in all of the cases I have checked. It could refer to the physical building, but that doesn't seem to be how it is generally used. Obviously in the cases where it is meant to refer to the "Bush Administration" the tag should be changed - since in 2009 the Bush Administration will not be in the White House.

Job: Check diaries with the "White House" tag (466) and change to "Bush Administration" or "George W. Bush" if that is what the diary is discussing. Leave as "White House" only if the diary is a discussion of the physical building.

Update: As of 12:50, 8 January 2007 (CST), all "White House" tags have been replaced with "Bush Administration" or "2008 elections" have 0 tags remaining.

The rule is to use both first and last names for tags. In the case of the owner of the Daily Kos site, the most used tag is "Markos Moulitsas".

Job: Change the "Condi Rice" tag to "Condoleezza Rice" (71), the "Condi" tag to "Condoleezza Rice" (7), and the "Rice" tag to "Condoleezza Rice" (94). Later addition: Also to be changed when found is the "Condoleeza Rice" tag to "Condoleezza Rice"; it's an frequent misspelling.

"Libby", "Lewis Libby", "Scooter", "Fitzgerald", "Plame", "Wilson", and "Joe Wilson" tags

With the Scooter Libby trial starting this coming week, it seemed to be a good time to fix the tags of various participants. Thus "Libby", "Lewis Libby" and "Scooter" tags should be changed to "Scooter Libby", "Fitzgerald" should be changed to "Patrick Fitzgerald" (but make sure it shouldn't be Keith or Ella instead), "Plame" should be changed to "Valerie Plame", and "Wilson" and "Joe Wilson" should be changed to "Joseph Wilson" (but be sure "Wilson" doesn't mean "Heather Wilson" or "Woodrow Wilson" or one of the others; if "Joe Wilson" refers to the Congressman from SC-02, leave the tag alone). — Sardonyx 17:15, 13 January 2007 (PST); added "Scooter" on 15 January 2007; added info about Congressman Joe Wilson on 20 January 2007.

Note: It is a virtual certainty that while working on one of the above tags you will run across others in the same tag list that need to be changed. Please be sure to change all the incorrect tags—not just the one you're working on, and not just the ones in this list: if you know the first names for any other entries, please fix them as well. With the 100 hours in full swing, let's get our own house in order by fixing the tags of the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate. (Note: the number twos were already taken care of.) The "Pelosi" tag should be changed to "Nancy Pelosi", and the "Reid" tag should be changed to "Harry Reid". Abeer Qasim Hamza al-Janabi (1)
Abeer Qassim al-Janabi (2)
Abeer Qassim Hamza (9)
Hamza (1)
Abeer (1)

Note that there is also one tag for a Abu Hamza al-Muhajer, who is probably a different person, but could be the one referenced in that last "Hamaza" tag above.

Update: "Abeer Qasim Hamza al-Janabi" chosen as the tag; job completed by Carolita, 31 January 2007, 10:00pm

"Clinton" tag

The rule is to use both first and last names for tags. For "Clinton", this could either be "Bill Clinton" or "Hillary Clinton", though it might possibly be "Clinton Administration" or even "Chelsea Clinton". You will have to read the diary text. If it refers to both Clintons, then replace the one tag with both, but don't duplicate any existing tag. — Sardonyx 17:35, 8 January 2007 (PST)

Job: Change the "Clinton" tag to "Bill Clinton", "Hillary Clinton", or another tag as appropriate. (230)

Update: Completed by CalifSherry, 30 Jan 2007, 9:30pm and by Carolita, 31 Jan 2007, 8:30pm CST; there are 0 "Clinton" tags remaining.
