Steve Gilliard Comments

Steve Gilliard (November 13, 1964 – June 2, 2007) was a freelance journalist and left-wing political blogger who ran the website The News Blog. Before he created that website, he was a commenter and guest poster on Daily Kos.

Commenting on Daily Kos

Steve's first comment on Daily Kos was on October 1, 2002, responding to Markos's diary from September 30, NJ Dems have GOP boxed in; the comment thread link is here, and it was signed sgilliard. Subsequent comments were signed steve gilliard until late April 2003, at which point his signature changed to steve_gilliard (though he tried the underscored version on six comments the evening of March 2). He was still using this final form for comment threads on The News Blog in 2007.

When Steve started commenting at Daily Kos, the blog was using Movable Type software. Markos was the sole blogger, and comment threads popped up in a separate window. The Movable Type site has subsequently been archived at DailyKos.net, and all links are to that archive.

In the archive, direct links can only be made to individual front-page posts, and to the comment threads of those posts. Only the entire thread can be linked to; there is no way to link to individual posts. So, once you bring up a comment thread in your browser, use the search function to find "gilliard". This will find all of Steve's comments, plus some direct references to those comments or questions to Steve.

In the list of comments below, the date given is the date the particular front-page post was made; it is possible, as in Steve's very first comment, that the actual comment was made the next day. (In the case of his comments to the December 31 diary, they were made the next year.)

The person writing the original front page post is assumed to be Markos; if there was a guest blogger that day—Billmon, Steve Soto, or RonK, Seattle—that blogger will be named. The open threads that Steve Gilliard created are credited to him on this page; if uncredited, open threads are also assumed to be set up by Markos.

Here is a link that will let you can find the 1200 comments Steve wrote on the current Daily Kos site (Scoop-based; opened October 13, 2003). He wrote under two accounts: stevegilliard (userid 1565) accounts for the bulk of them (1150), from October 16, 2003—the day after the Movable Type site closed and was archived—to January 19, 2007, but in 2004, he created steve gilliard (userid 9795) and used it to write 50 comments in a two-month period between April 14 and June 13, 2004, during which the first account wasn't used. Fortunately, a single search can get links to all 1200 comments, though it will take approximately half a minute to complete and the links will only display 50 at a time:
