Narrative

A major factor for the fall election will be the South Dakota abortion referendum. The state legislature passed the most extreme anti-abortion ban in the nation, in anticipation of Roe v. Wade falling. Much to the Republican solons' discomfort, the issue will be decided by the people in the privacy of the voting booth. There will likely be a heavy turnout by the right-to-life warriors, but similarly, a heavy turnout from the middle of the road and and left can also be expected. The impact on the gubernatorial and state legislative races is difficult to predict, but everyone may be surprised. Should the referendum pass, Republican incumbents nationwide will be quaking in their shoes come 2008.
