Senate Daily Summary

The Senate continued consideration of the the minmuim wage bill passed by the House during the 100-Hour Plan today. During debate on the bill, the Senate rejected the Kyl Amendment by 46 yeas to 50 nays, which would have waived a section of the Congressional Budget Resolution and extended the depreciation treatment of leasehold, restaurant, and retail space D119 improvements, through December 31, 2008,.

That was the last amendment taken up on the minimum wage bill, and subsequently there was a vote for cloture to close further debate on it which passed by a 88 to 8. This opened the way for final passage which took place the next day, Thursday, February 1, 2007.

Iraq Study Group Report

  • Senate Committee on the Judiciary - The Committee concluded a hearing to examine the Iraq Study Group (ISG) report, focusing on recommendations for improvements to Iraq's police and criminal justice system, including S. 119, to prohibit profiteering and fraud relating to military action, relief, and reconstruction efforts, after receiving testimony from former Representative Lee Hamilton Co-Chair of the ISG, and Edwin Meese III who was a memebr of the ISG.

    • Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security concluded a hearing to examine challenges and strategies for securing the border of the United States, focusing on the United States Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology (US-VISIT) program, and strategic, operational, and technological challenges at land ports of entry, after receiving testimony from Richard C.   • Senate Special Committee on Aging - The Committee concluded a hearing to examine if Medicare Part D is working for Low Income Subsidy (LIS) eligible beneficiaries, after receiving testimony from S.
