Pryor Political Family
The Pryor Political Family
Based in: Arkansas
The Pryor family is relatively unknown in the nation as a whole, but they remain very influential in Arkansas to this day. David Pryor won the Arkansas Governorship in 1974, and was re-elected in 1976. He refused to run for a third term in 1978, instead opting to seek a seat in the Senate. He won the seat, and was re-elected in 1984 and 1990 before retiring in 1997. The man who replaced Pryor as Governor was a young Attorney General named Bill Clinton.
When he retired from the Senate, Pryor was replaced by Republican Tim Hutchinson. Hutchinson was defeated for re-election in 2002 by David's son Mark, who serves as the current junior Senator from Arkansas. Mark Pryor is part of the coalition of conservative southern Democrats, a group that would also include Louisiana Senators John Breaux and Mary Landrieu.
