According to historian Andy Worthington, author of The Guantanamo Files Noor Aslam was apprehended during a general sweep of tha bazaar in Bermal, Paktika Province, Afghanistan.<ref name=GuantanamoFiles> Template:Cite book</ref> According to Worthington Noor Aslam and his two cousins, Haji Osman Khan and Abdul Salam, ran a small family based hawala, a funds transfer company, with offices in Bermal, Miran Shah, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates.
Afghan guest workers in the United Arab Emirates used the hawala to remit funds home.
Noor Aslam and Osman Khan were repatriated from Guantanamo to Afghan custody prior to having a Combatant Status Review Tribunal convened to confirm their "enemy combatant" status. Noor Aslam's cousin Abdul Salaam had the very last Combatant Status Review Tribunal conducted with the captive present. Abdul Salaam's first annual [[Administrative Review Board cleared him for repatriation in 2005.
