Nancy L. Worley, a Democrat, was Alabama’s 50th Secretary of State. She served from 2002-2006. Worley, a native of New Hope, Alabama, in Madison County, grew up on a family farm and was graduated from New Hope High School.

Worley received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montevallo and her Master of Arts degree from Jacksonville State University. She also studied at the Universities of London (England), Edinburgh (Scotland), Alabama (Tuscaloosa), and Alabama (Huntsville).

Worley taught English and Latin at Decatur High School for 25 years, served as Cheerleader Sponsor and was advisor for several student clubs and activities. Worley also taught part-time for Northeast State Junior College and John C. Calhoun Community College for 20 years. In 1998, Worley became a membership recruiter for the Alabama Retired Teachers’ Association, AEA/NEA, for an eight-county district.

Worley’s Decatur students annually won awards in competition with public and private school students throughout Alabama and the nation. Numerous Latin students received Gold and Silver medals and her classes always scored above the national average on the National Latin Exam. Her cheerleaders won all-state awards for a decade and her English students won America Legion, Civitan, VFW and other patriotic speech contests, as well as writing competitions.

Worley was the first person to be elected twice as President of the Alabama Education Association. She also served twice as state president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Association of Classroom Teachers (ACT). Worley currently serves on the YMCA’s Youth in Government Board, the TSUM Davis Theatre’s Advisory Board, the Editorial Board of the Alabama Forum, the State Democratic Executive Committee and the Alabama Consumer Task Force.

Worley was a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Welfare Reform and the Governor’s Task Force on Education Reform. She was also a member of the Lt. Governor’s Legislative Council. She has been an active member of the Tuition Eligibility Board which provides scholarships to the families of deceased police officers and firefighters. In addition, Worley served on the University of Montevallo Alumni Board, the League of Women Voters’ Board, the AEA and ACT Boards, AARP’s Capital City Task Force, and the Alabama Humanities Foundation Board of Directors.

Nancy Worley frequently conducts leadership and parliamentary procedure training for diverse groups such as the Red Cross, Spinners Club, Association of Realtors, Pilot Club, and numerous education organizations.

Worley has been honored as the Alumnus of the Year by the University of Montevallo, was named Alabama’s Outstanding Young Educator by the Alabama Jaycees, and was featured as one of America’s 100 Women of Promise by Good Housekeeping magazine. She received the Education Leader Award from Delta Kappa Gamma, the Teacher of the Year Award from Decatur City Schools three times, and was the Education Award recipient from the Alabama Senior Citizens’ Hall of Fame. Nancy Worley has received numerous other awards and honors, including her election as Alabama Secretary of State.

As Secretary of State, and Alabama’s chief elections official, Worley has coordinated a successful statewide Voter ID educational program, a Smackdown Your Vote program targeting youth registration and participation in government, and she has worked for the passage of numerous bills and other election reforms.

Worley removed “Make Busy” and “Not Ready” buttons from her state agency’s telephone, and she and her staff have shortened turnaround time on UCC filings to two days. In her Lands and Trademarks Division, she has worked to upgrade historic scanned land records and to notify patrons of outdated trademarks.

Elected in 2002, Worley served her first term in public office as Alabama’s 50th Secretary of State.
