Politics

Hannemann ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1986 and in 1990.
In 1994, Hannemann ran for City Council to replace Arnold Morgado, who decided to run for mayor. Hannemann won with more than 51 percent of the vote in a race that included five other candidates, so no runoff election was necessary. He won re-election in 1998 unopposed.
Hannemann was voted chairman of the Honolulu City Council in a 1998 reshuffling that ousted John DeSoto from the chairmanship. A year later, the council split again and Hannemann was voted out as chairman. The ousting was supported by Duke Bainum and installed Jon Yoshimura as chairman.
Hannemann stepped down from the council early in his second term to run for mayor in 2000 against Mayor Jeremy Harris and Frank F. Fasi. Mayor Harris won reelection.
In 2004, Hannemann won reelection with 49.3% of the vote over Duke Bainum who garnered 48.8%.
