The Significance

Jesse Ventura, a former Navy SEAL and professional wrestler and former mayor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, faced off against State Attorney General Skip Humphrey and St. Paul mayor (now Senator) Norm Coleman. Ventura, running on a Reform Party ticket, defeated both major party candidates, becoming the first and only Reform party member elected Governor of a state. He was also one of the first celebrity office holders/seekers of the modern political era.
