The office of Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu was established in 1905, when the territorial legislature passed the law which established Hawaii's five counties. The City and County of Honolulu is the entirety of the island of Oahu. The Mayor is elected to no more than two four-year terms. Honolulu is the 13th largest municipality in the United States.

The Mayor of Honolulu has power over appointment and removal of administrators and has veto power over the Honolulu City Council.

Honolulu Hale

Honolulu Hale, located on 530 South King Street in downtown Honolulu is the official seat of government of the city and county, site of the office of the Mayor and the chambers of Honolulu City Council.

It is from Honolulu Hale that the Mayor of Honolulu makes the annual State of the City address outlining his administrative and legislative intent for the coming year and a summation and comparison of the previous year with prior years.
