A political philosophy that holds that the majority of the population is entitled to primacy in society.
Majoritarian systems are usually cited as a potential downside to democracy, as protection for minorities is often overruled.
In the United States, protection for minorities within its democratic system is mostly enforced by the US Constitution as well as the Supreme Court's interpretations of it. On many issues, for instance, gay marriage, both sides argue over whether the majority should decide through referenda or the legislature, or whether minority rights should be protected by the courts and the Constitution.
Rule of law and protection for minorities are often overlooked as critical components of the American model of democracy. There is more than "one person, one vote" to our system and liberties. However, these may be the most difficult concepts for other societies to integrate into their own systems.
