Joe Biden is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime. Biden was one of seven candidates for the Democratic nomination in the 1988 presidential election. He was first elected to the U.S. Senate from Delaware in 1972.
Biden has recently earned the wrath of Democrats because he supported President Bush's second term Bankruptcy Reform legislation — a major piece of corporate welfare for the highly profitable credit card industry — at the expense of working Americans. (Many Democrats add "D-MBNA" as a suffix to Senator Biden's name to indicate his apparent fondness for the credit card issuer MBNA.) Grassroots Democrats also criticize Senator Biden's lack of party discipline, such as his failure to join his fellow Democrats in calling for an investigation into the Jeff Gannon scandal.
Senator Biden ran for President in 2008, but he withdrew after the Iowa caucus.
