Joan Fitz-Gerald (D) is the President of the Colorado State Senate. She represents State Senate District 16, which includes the City of Golden in Jefferson County as well as all of Summit, Grand, Clear Creek and Gilpin Counties and a portion of Boulder County west of the City of Boulder. She was first elected to the State Senate in 2000, she became Minority Leader in 2003, and she led the Democratic takeover of both the State House and Senate in 2004. Before that she was the Jefferson County Clerk, and a candidate for Congress.
She is the former Chair of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.
Fitz-Gerald was born June 2, 1948, in New York City. She attended Marymount Manhattan College, earning a B.A. Political Science/History 1970 and also attended Fordham University Law School in 1970. She was married in 1972 to John Fitz-Gerald. They have two sons Matthew and Patrick, both graduates of The University of Colorado, Boulder. Fitz-Gerald is proud to say that she finished the New York City Marathon in 1993.
