Congressman Jim Matheson is a third-term Democrat in the “reddest” of the red states - Utah. In 2000, Matheson first won this seat by soundly defeating a wealthy candidate, who spent more than $1 million of his own money.
In 2004, the Club for Growth dumped more than a quarter of a million dollars into the war chest of Matheson’s opponent, and national Republicans ran hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of attack ads. Nevertheless, Matheson again prevailed, despite President Bush winning 66% of the vote in the Second District.
