Background

Iowa, the Hawkeye state, was the 29th state to join the union, on December 28, 1846. The state capital is Des Moines, which is also the largest city. The state flower is the wild rose, the state tree is the oak, the state bird is the eastern goldfinch, and the state rock is the geode. Iowa has roughly 3 million people; 94% of them are white, and 97% were born in the US. The state was settled by immigrants from the Ohio Valley and New England states, Germany, Bohemia, Norway, Sweden and The Netherlands.

Politically, the state is known for choosing its Presidential nominees in the Iowa caucus, which is held in January of Presidential election years. In recent years, the state has been one of the most evenly divided in the country; it voted for Gore by 4000 votes in 2000, then voted for Bush by 12000 votes in 2004. Iowa is produces more renewable fuels, like ethanol, than any other state, and it is also the second largest per capita producer of wind energy.

The state hosts two iconic entertainment events every summer: the Iowa State Fair and RAGBRAI (the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa).

Iowa has produced one President - Herbert Hoover, and one Vice President - Henry A. Wallace.
