Central American republic, whose democratically elected president, Manuel Zelaya, was overthrown in a 2009 military coup. Despite the near total condemnation of this coup by Latin American governments, the response of the Obama administration was lukewarm. Many observers considered this to be an early indication of the newly elected US president's lack of commitment to fostering democracy. This is of course at odds with stated US policy, e.g. in Afghanistan. Furthermore it is most illustrative to compare both US official and US media responses to the Honduran coup with their reaction to the Iranian presidential elections. In the former case few seemed to care about the destruction of democracy. The disputed Iranian election (a la Bush in 2000) was on everyone's lips, however.
