Gene Ward, a Republican, elected in 2006 to represent the 17th Representative district in the Hawaii State Legislature. The 17th district includes the Kalama Valley, Queen's Gate and Hawaii Kai areas on the island of Oahu, Hawai'i.

Experience in the Hawaii State Legislature

  • MINORITY LEADER: Gene served in the House from 1990-98. His colleagues elected him Minority Leader (93-97).
  • OUTSPOKEN ON TAX RELIEF: never raised taxes, voted for lower taxes.
  • OUTSPOKEN ON QUALITY EDUCATION: strong advocate for charter schools and small school boards with maximum community and parental involvement.
  • OUTSPOKEN ON SMALL BUSINESS: Co-founder Small Business Caucus with Rep. David Stegmaier and spoke out regularly with Senator Sam Slom on small business and economic issues.
  • OUTSPOKEN ON TRANSPARENCY AND DEMOCRACTIC PROCEDURES: Gene helped bring about needed reforms in the committee system where only Chairs were to vote.
  • LED THE CHARGE ON KALANIANAOLE HWY WIDENING PROJECT-and kept the traffic flowing and the project on time and on budget- something we’ll need strong leadership in again while sewers are placed underground in our community. [1]

Senior Democracy Advisor

  • Served in USAID Office of Democracy and Governance and promoted democracy throughout the world after writing text on the ills of campaign finance for developing countries. [3]

Peace Corps Country Director

  • Supervised the humanitarian efforts 46 Peace Corps Volunteers, 18 staff and $1 million budget in East Timor. [4]

Small Business Development Specialist

  • Founded with Dr. George Kanahele the Hawaii Entrepreneurship Training & Development Institute and trained 3,000 young people in Hawaii and overseas to start their own business. [5]

Vietnam veteran

  • Served as Translator-Interpreter in Vietnam. [6]

PH.D. University of Hawaii

  • Completed dissertation on the values and attitudes of Hawaiians entering and succeeding in business. Gene has taught at Chaminade and HPU as an Adjunct Professor. [7]
