Emily Naeole, elected in 2006, represents District 5 on the Hawaii County Council. District 5 includes Puna Makai.

The following information is from the Hawaii State Office of Elections:

Born September 23, 1956, the 5th of 8 children born to Gabriel and Mary (Makuakane) Kealoha, raised in a home built by her father that remains standing today beside the Opihikao Church in Lower Puna.
Her father, a fisherman, immersed them in the traditional Hawaiian culture of foraging, hunting, growing vegetables, and sharing with our rural community of service to God, family, community and aina.
Marrying Harold Naeole shortly after graduation from Pahoa High School in 1974, they are the proud parents of four very successful children, Hidi, Keala, Malama, and Kopa, who have blessed them with five mo’opuna.
As a young strong willed woman, she journeyed off in the wrong direction. Being from a very supportive family she was blessed with an opportunity in 1989 to turn her life around by enrolling in a substance abuse program, and enter and successfully complete college, which she credits with her present successes. Currently, she’s a farmer on her Hawaiian homestead at Maku’u, entrepreneur, and Mentor Program Leader for Kua O Kala Public Charter School, and a committed community volunteer and church member. [1]
