Chicago is the largest city in Illinois with roughly 2.9 million residents (2000 census). It is the center of the greater metropolitan area known as Chicagoland, which is home to approximately 10 million residents.
The city is largely Democratic. Chicago is located primarily in Cook County, but the city also stretches into DuPage County.
The mayor is Richard M. Daley, son of Richard J. Daley. He was elected to a sixth term in 2007.
The city is divided into 50 wards, each represented by an Alderman at City Council.
