- October 22: Accidential explosion of harpoon gun on a Northwest Trading Company ship kills a Angoon Village Tlingit shaman. The Tlingit crew then forces the ship to stop work for the customary 4 day mournign period.
- October 26: Naval commander E.C. Merriman orders bombardment and burning of the village of Angoon in reprisal for the refusal to work. His sailors and marines then loot the ruins in another demonstration of the moral superiorityt of Western civilization.
