  • New York gets its first aqueduct, a structure that 33 miles long. Tokyo's second, and principal aqueduct (24 miles long) was completed way back in 1654.
  • Wilhem Weitling publishes Guaranties of Harmony and Freedom.
  • Karl Marx becomes editor of the liberal Cologne newspaper Rheinische Zeitung.
  • Order of the Sons of Temperance is founded.
  • Sir William Dillon publishes Conquest of Siberia and the History of the Transactions, Wars, Commerce, etc, etc, carried on between Russia and China from the Earliest Period.

Timeline

  • January: Last survivors of the Anglo-Indian Army that invaded Afghanistan are captured and killed in the the town of Gandamack.
