Wisconsin became the 39th state on May 29, 1848. Madison is the state capital and Milwaukee is Wisconsin's largest city.

In the last five presidential contests, Wisconsin has supported the Democrats. Wisconsin was considered a "swing" state during the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections, its residents being divided equally between Democrats and Republicans. Al Gore in 2000 won by about 5,700 votes, John Kerry won it by 14,000 in 2004, and Barack Obama won it by nearly 41,500 votes and roughly a 14% margin in 2008. Republicans are concentrated in the eastern and north-central parts of the state, especially in the suburban counties around Milwaukee. It is generally considered part of the so-called Blue Firewall as one of eighteen states and the District of Columbia that no Republican nominee for President has won since 1988.

In 2010, Republicans did unusually well in the statewide election, ousting Senator Russ Feingold and electing Governor Scott Walker. Governor Scott Walker, backed by the Hard Right interests associated with the Koch Family, undertook polarizing actions on behalf of out-of-state interests and against organized labor. Such led to mass demonstrations and to an effort to recall Republican state legislatures and eventually the Governor himself.
