Tonga, a.k.a. the Kingdom of Tonga is a Polynesian island nation between New Zealand and Hawaii, south of Samoa and east of Fiji. The country consists of an archipelago of 169 islands, 36 of which are inhabited. Tonga's economy is characterized by non-monetized subsistence farming and fishing and dependence on monetary remittances from the half of the country's population living abroad in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. American cities with significant ethnic Tongan populations include East Palo Alto, California, Oakland, California, Los Angeles, California, Salt Lake City, Utah, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Euless, Texas. This dispersal reflects trade and missionary activity.
