Contents

Iraq War Supporter

Cole has been to Iraq five times, briefly, to demonstrate support for the Bush administration's imperial project. The U.S. is losing the war in Iraq.

Cole has no military service, despite being of draft age during the Vietnam war. This was an issue in both his most recent congressional campaign and when he voted against subsidized health insurance for national guard members.

Name-Calling

In 2005, Cole issued an ugly memo to his Republican colleagues arguing that in order for Republicans to win in the 2006 election, they must successfully "define Democrats as carping critics who favor surrender in Iraq, higher taxes and more government spending". That is the kind of language that must make other Fulbrighters proud!

Climbing Leadership Ladder

On January 3, 2004, Republican Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert appointed Cole as one of the nine Republicans on the powerful House Rules Committee. The House Republican Conference immediately approved the appointment. Cole had earlier become deputy whip under republcian Rep. Roy Blunt. n.a. "Speaker Appoints Rep. Cole to Rules Committee." States News Service. January 4,2005.

Foleygate

Cole is one of the five Republican members of the ten member House Ethics Committee. On Wednesday October 4 he flew back to Washington for what he termed an “emergency meeting," not hear from witnesses but to try to set limit the scope of the investigation. Cole believes that Foley's resignation puts him beyond the committee’s proper jurisdiction: "We want to know who knew what and when, and what was done about it. I would expect that anybody whose name has been mentioned should expect the opportunity to testify before the ethics committee. If they refuse to accept the opportunity to testify, they should expect to receive a subpoena." "I want to get to the bottom of this,” Cole said. “I take this deadly seriously." "First and foremost, I’m worried about the safety of the kids and the obligation we owe them and their parents." See Chris Casteel, Nolan Clay & Michael McNutt. "Istook Aide May be Victim in Page Scandal." The Oklahoman. NewsOK.com No one is going to get the better of Tom Cole when it comes to homosexual panic!

Anti-Environmental Voting Record

Cole voted against the environment on five recent important legialative roll call votes: Energy (House R.C. 132); Artic Refuge (House R.C. 666); Environmental Funding (House R.C. 88); Coastal Protection (House R.C. 192) and Fuel Efficiency (House R.C. 121).
