Surfrider Foundation

From dKosopedia

The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education. There are 60 Surfrider chapters located along the East, West, Gulf, Hawaiian and Puerto Rican coasts.

The Surfrider Foundation has four core initiatives:

  1. Clean water - "to protect and restore coastal water quality from the ridges, through our watersheds and out to the nearshore ocean where we surf, swim and recreate."
  2. Healthy beaches - "to promote the right of low-impact, free and open access to the world's waves and beaches for all people."
  3. Beach access - "to protect and preserve healthy beaches that are important coastal ecosystems and recreational areas."
  4. Special places - "to proactively conserve, protect, and restore special coastal and ocean places." [1]

There are two chapters in Hawaii: the Oahu Chapter and the Maui Chapter. The Oahu Chapter is involved in having Pupukea remain undeveloped and is also against the Turtle Bay Resort's development plans for the North Shore.
