Steve King

From dKosopedia

Steve King (R - Kiron) was born on May 28, 1949 in Storm Lake, IA. He attended Northwest Missouri State University. He owns King Construction Company, a small business. He was elected to the Iowa Senate in 1996, and in 2002 was elected to the U.S. House from Iowa's Fifth Congressional District (IA-05).

King was selected as the 2002 nominee in an unusual way. The four-way Republican primary ended in a near tie, and none of the candidates received the 35% of the vote needed to win (as required by state law). So a party convention was called and King got the nomination on the fourth ballot as his reality-based opponents were eliminated one by one.

Quotations

After Sioux City Judge Jeffrey Neary granted a lesbian couple a divorce, Steve King's office released this statement: "This situation paints a clear picture of why we need to rein in renegade judges legislating from the bench. By granting this homosexual couple a divorce, Judge Neary has pretended their marriage was valid in the State of Iowa. Unless I’m mistaken, it was in Vermont, not Iowa, that Howard “the Coward” Dean slyly signed midnight legislation making same sex unions legal. Unicorns, leprechauns, gay marriages in Iowa-- these are all things you will never find because they just don’t exist. But perhaps Judge Neary would grant divorces to unicorns and leprechauns too.

The Defense of Marriage Act clearly addresses the fact that states do not have to recognize unions granted in other states. The people of Iowa, who elected me to office, stand strong behind the belief that the sacred institution of marriage remains between one man and one woman exclusively, and as their Representative, I will work long and tirelessly to maintain the legality of God’s intentions."

On the Abu Ghraib abuses: "The dismembered and charred corpses of American contractors dangling over the Euphrates River in comparison to the abuse committed by a few soldiers at Abu Ghraib are like the crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer compared to those of Heidi Fleiss. What amounts to hazing is not even in the same ballpark as mass murder." - May 13, 2004, source

On Tom DeLay: "From a philosophical perspective, (DeLay) and I are on the same page. We are both solid, committed conservatives and we are not ashamed of it. We stand up and say what we believe and we go to work for it... We think down the same path. He is one of rare individuals that I just click with." (SC Journal, immediately after DeLay's indictment)

On Joe McCarthy: "If Rep. Barbara Lee studied her history, she'd recognize Joe McCarthy was a great American hero." Source: DM Register.

On the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi: "There probably are not 72 virgins in the hell he's at," King said. "And if there are, they probably all look like Helen Thomas." DailyKos

In a speech on the House floor, King demonstrated a model of a wall along the Mexican border. He said "We could also electrify this wire with the kind of current that would not kill somebody, but it would be a discouragement for them to be fooling around with it. We do that with livestock all the time." The Hill, July 13, 2006.

King said that SCHIP stands for Socialized, Clinton-style, Hillarycare for Illegals and their Parents. ([1])

If Obama is elected President, then "The radical Islamists, the al-Qaida ... would be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on Sept. 11 because they would declare victory in this war on terror," , said King. (Source: Lawmaker: Terrorists to Cheer Obama Win, AP, March 8, 2008)

On nuclear power, King said “By the way, if you had been chained to the reactor at Three Mile Island when it started its reactivity, you would have gotten about the equivalent dose of an X-ray,” (Source: Iowa Independent, Aug. 21, 2008).
