Nigeria

From dKosopedia

Nigeria, a former British colony which gained independence in the 1960s, is the most populace country in Africa, with more than 100 million people, and a capital at Lagos. It is rich in oil and uranium, but has been plauged by coups and civil war, often with a basis in the rivalries among different ethnic and religious groups in the country. Currently, many of the Northern States in this federal country have adopted Islamic Sharia law and are on the verge of breaking with their Christian and Animist compatriots in the South in what could become a civil war.

In 2005-2006, a group of Muslim clerics forbade polio vaccinations in norther Nigeria. This led to new outbreaks in neighboring countries, and delayed the worldwide eradication of polio by several years.

A new group of well armed, and militarially sophisticated rebels, called Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), has begun to systematically attack oil infrastructure. They work closely with the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force (NDPVF).
