Progressive Democratic Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland, 2000-present. First elected in 1999 on a hard-line crime-reduction platform. Took office in 2000, and since then, has reduced violent crime rates dramatically. A young, popular and effective big-city mayor and perhaps the most respected politician in Maryland, O'Malley will likely be the Democratic candidate in the 2006 gubernatorial election. He is also rumored to have Presidential ambitions.

By profession a lawyer, O'Malley, who served on the city council prior to his election as mayor, is also the frontman for a Baltimore-based Irish rock band.
