Marie-George Buffet

From dKosopedia

Marie-George Buffet (born 7 May 1949 in Sceaux, Hauts-de-Seine) is a French politician, currently the head of the French Communist Party. She joined the party in 1969, and was named the French Minister of Sports from 4 June 1997 until 5 May 2002 in a coalition government. Ms. Buffet was re-elected in 6/16/02 to another 5 year term in the National Assembly to represent Seine-Saint-Denis.

As the Chairperson of the French Communist Party, Buffet speaks regularly on a wide range of political topics relating to the welfare of working people in France, across Europe and around the world. Buffet remarked remarked on the plight of the people in New Orleans blaming particularly the, “indifférence of Bush.” Most of Buffet’s speeches tend to focus upon practical implementations of the government’s duty to provide for its citizens. In another recent speech, Buffet exclaimed that what the working class needed was socialized housing. In a dramatic and often emotional way, she explained that the working class needs real housing in a timely fashion. Other issues that Buffet is interested in and has spoken on are, the Bolkestein directive (a free trade directive linked with the EU), energy initiatives, and other ideological issues linked with stopping privatization and aiding the lower classes or working people.

As a party leader in the French National Assembly, Buffet has spoken to the need to organize with the communist and socialist parties with other states within the EU. This can be seen in the Marie-George Buffet Statement, which came out in June 2005. The statement is a comment on the aftermath of a referendum in which further free trade laws would be established in the European Union, but because of the resistance of the left were not. Buffet sees the French Communist victory as a victory for communists across Europe. Buffet remarks, “I invite from the bottom of my heart men and women and organizations of the left, even those who might have voted 'yes', to take your place, to participate with us in this noble adventure to construct another Europe, a genuine left wing alternative.”
