Lester Maddox

Lester Maddox was a segregationist Democrat politician from Georgia.

Maddox, an Atlanta restaurant owner, was elected Governor of Georgia in 1966 as a segregationist Democrat. Zell Miller was his executive secretary. Term limited under the Georgia Constitution, Maddox ran for and was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1970. He quarreled with the new Governor, Jimmy Carter, and lost a second bid for Governor in 1974.

Maddox ran for President against Carter in 1976 as the nominee of the American Independent Party. He won a million votes nationwide but failed to carry a single state.

Maddox endorsed Ronald Reagan for President over Jimmy Carter in 1980.

Maddox ran for Governor again in 1990, finishing fourth in the Democratic Primary behind Zell Miller, Roy Barnes and Andrew Young.
