After an early popularity surge, he quickly lost popularity by sacking the popular foreign minister Makiko Tanaka, sending Japanese troops to Iraq, and failing to deliver on promised structural reforms to the financial industry, state-run pension funds, and postal service.

Friend of George W. Bush. Disliked in many Asian countries for his visits to Yasukuni Shrine.
