John S. Tanner

John S. Tanner is the Democratic Representative from Tennessee's 8th district in the U.S. House. He was first elected to Congress in 1988, and before that he served in the Tennessee State House from 1976-1988.

Tanner was born on September 22, 1944. He attended the University of Tennessee on a basketball scholarship, and went on to earn a law degree in 1968. Tanner served in the Navy from 1968-1972.

John and his wife Betty Ann live in Union City, where John is an Elder in the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. They have two children and three grandchildren.
