Introduction

Jo Bonner represents the First District of Alabama in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is a Republican and is based in Mobile. Bonner first won election to this seat in 2002, when he defeated Democrat Judy McCain Belk to grab the seat previously held by his long-time boss and mentor, Sonny Callahan. Indeed, Bonner was Callahan's chief of staff and the retiring Congressman's handpicked successor. Belk is running against Bonner again in 2004, but she has little chance of winning. Bonner is an Assistant Majority Whip and sits on Agriculture, Budget, and Science Committees. This district was one of the first in the South to go Republican, having elected a Republican in 1964 while Goldwater swept the state. Republicans have not let go since.

In a 217 to 215 vote in the House of Representatives, Bonner supported large reductions in spending on Federal governemnt programs for the poor, students and farmers as the "only vehicle" to "get a handle on runaway federal spending," after Hurricane Katrina. Source: Jeffery McMurray. "Alabama's Congressmen Follow Party Line on Budget Cuts." Associated Press. November 18, 2005. Bonner's statement was incorrect. Other possible "vehicles" would include reductions in favorite Republican Federal government programs like highway pork barrel and military pork barrel.
