Democrat Jennifer Granholm was elected the 47th Governor of Michigan in 2002, the first woman to do so in the state's history. She was easily reelected in 2006.

Background

Granholm was born in Canada but grew up in southern California. After winning a beauty paegent in high school, Granholm had hopes of becoming an actress and moved to Hollywood. Failing to win a big break, she went on to get a degree, and was an honors graduate of both the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard Law School. She met her husband there and settled in Northville, MI after graduation.

Granholm's political career began as counsel for Wayne County Executive Ed McNamara's office in Detroit. She then ran and successfully won the Attorney General's seat in Michigan. Four years later, she was elected Governor by a convincing margain over Republican Dick Posthumous.

Born in Canada, she is ineligible to be President or Vice-President of the United States.
