Unconstitutional Warrantless Eavesdropping

The Republican Congressional leadership have blocked several Democratic proposals to initiate a congressional investigation of the unconstitutional National Security Agency (NSA) warrantless surveillance program. In the U.S. Senate, the proposal by Sen. Jay Rockefeller to investigate the program was voted down on party lines in the Senate Committee on Intelligence in March 7, 2006. Unrestricted and unaccountable police power is a clear and present danger to democracy.

Rockefeller supported a bill to grant immunity to telecom companies who violated the FISA law during the George W. Bush administration. Just prior to this vote, he received tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from executives at AT&T and Verizon.
