Mitchell, George J.

Former Democratic Senator from Maine, 1980-1995; Senate Majority Leader, 1989-1995; Architect of the 1998 Northern Ireland peace plan; and the new chairman of Disney.

A protege of the great Maine Democrat Edmund Muskie, Mitchell was appointed to his Senate seat in 1980 after Muskie resigned to serve as Secretary of State under Jimmy Carter. Mitchell won a full term in 1982 and again in 1988. In January 1989 he became the Senate Majority Leader, a post he held until his retirement in 1995.
