Prior to 1993, Eritrea was part of Ethiopia on the Horn of Africa largely along the Red Sea coastline. The EPLF (Eritrean People's LIberation Front) secured independence after a 30 year civil war, and it engaged in a border war with Yemen in 1995 and a border war with Ethiopia from 1998 to 2000 which was finaly resolve in 2002 with the acceptance of the judgment of an international court in the Hague. During the Colonial era Italy was the major European power in the area and retains trade ties to Eritrea.
