U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice succeeded Colin Powell, who had at least the capacity to be ashamed of himself sometimes. Condi is arguably the stupidest of the Bush League, or perhaps, the smartest, and the best judge of just how absurd statements in international news media can get without actual laughing. For example:

• "what is at the root, is a hatred of freedom"

Or that, in her opinion, Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden were in some conspiracy together, despite being bitter enemies and extreme ideological opposites.

Some observers believe that she holds her current position due to playing the race card, but, more likely, it is cronyism: As with all other posts in the Bush administration, they go to whoever is least likely to explain to the public exactly how stupid the boss is, and how much Cheney runs the show.

Another explanation is that she has her job, and Bush's eternal gratitude, for teaching him high school geography - when he was in his 40s.

A final explanation is that she was the only Bush League candidate for the job who had not actually been photographed shaking hands with a dictator she had just sold chemical weapons to, or cutting deals to hold hostages a few months longer which are technically high treason, or some such stuff.
