Upbringing, Early Career

Born on March 31, 1948, son of the late Tennessee Senator Albert Gore, Sr. and Pauline Gore. After graduating from Harvard in 1969, Gore enlisted in the Army and served honorably in Vietnam. In 1976 he was elected to the House of Representatives, where he stayed until being elected to the Senate in 1984 and again in 1990. In 1988 he ran for the Democratic nomination of President, painting himself as a more conservative choice to Jesse Jackson or Michael Dukakis.

In 1992 he was selected as Bill Clinton's running mate and was then elected to the Vice Presidency, which he filled from 1993-2001.

2000 Election and Beyond

In 2000, he was the party's nominee for President. While Vice President and Presidential nominee, Gore was frequently derided and abused for being cautious, stiff, uninspiring. During his campaign for President, however, he was widely praised for his bold decision to pick Joe Lieberman as his running mate, who became the first Jewish American on a major party ticket. Regardless, he continued to be mocked for having too wooden a personality.

Those aren't exactly the words the media uses for him now. After endorsing Howard Dean in 2003 and delivering a series of scathing attacks against the corrupt White House administration, he is emerging as one of the Democratic Party's most forceful voices for progressive change. The US would certainly be a different country had the Supreme Court allowed the votes to be counted in Florida.
